A Canonical Adventure

Track List & Recordings

1. Canoeing Down the Canon

This canon is comprised of a long and a short phrase, repeated with overlap, requiring the student to phrase one hand while the other plays legato.

The subject itself is over 4 bars and extra repetition can be created by adding an unlimited repeat from the beginning of bar 5 to the end of bar 8

In writing canons for children, my aim (apart from creating a fun experience of course) is to provide a small amount of material with maximum opportunity for repetition.

In this way, the child can truly live into and feel the individual voice or motif which is essential in successful independence of the parts.

In most of these canons, there is a fair amount of repetition of the parts but I would recommend, for learning and practice purposes, adding some repeat bar lines to direct the student, before the ending, back to the first instance of hands together.

After all, the more repeats the merrier in establishing fluency!

And of course, always practice each individual cell or phrase, both separately and with hands together, overlapping first the similar phrases and then the contrasting ones.

The primary aim, above all, is to have fun with the music.

If the canon is too hard for the child, it will become laboured and something of a mission to learn.

In this case, put it away for a later date.

When a student is able to manage the parts independently and bring them successfully together, enormous joy and fun can be experienced and this is ultimately what we want for our children in their learning.

2. Cotton Candy

This canon is comprised of two subjects -a 4 bar subject which comprises 2 short slurred phrases followed by a longer legato phrase; and a 5 bar subject which comprises one long legato phrase.

The first subject is reprised and further repetition can be achieved by applying an unlimited repeat from the beginning of bar 6 to the end of bar 15. The student will be required to balance slurs and staccato against legato, and walking notes (crotchets) against running notes (quavers).

5. How Canonic!

This canon is comprised of 4 different phrases, each over 4 bars and comprising a single note staccato introduction to an otherwise legato phrase. Two note slurs at the end. As there is no repetition of each phrase, it is recommended that repeat dots are drawn in at the end of each to allow for more repetition in the learning process and to establish fluency.
